Explainer Story

My final assignment in this course was writing an explainer story about how education policy in the United States may change from the Biden to Trump Administration after Trump won his second term as president last November. In the story, I use information from multiple online sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, World Health Organization and The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 to try to explain potential changes in America’s education policy under the second Trump Administration. In the story, I discuss the potential shuttering of the Department of Education, what Trump and Biden already did with education policy in their first terms and the performance of K-12 and college education during each president’s first term in office.

Iowa Football Walk-on Story

For my final story in the class, I decided to investigate how the recent House v. NCAA settlement may impact the University of Iowa football walk-on program since the program has a rich walk-on tradition. The House settlement aims to strip the current scholarship limits and instead replace it with a new roster limit of 105 players, almost certainly affecting players without scholarships. In the article, I use multiple sources to attempt to make meaning of the issue and the impacts the settlement may have on the UI football program.

HTML Promotional Email Project

Project Defined: Our Module 4 project was creating a promotional email for “Wancher Auditorium” in Figma. We had to design for both desktop and mobile view of the email. Both versions had to feature multiple sections, including a branded header, a promo area, a feature area, a calendar of events and a footer. Adobe Photoshop had to be used to design a dynamic promo area that had textual contrast and included the required information. Figma was used for the remainder of the project.

Yotopia Frozen Yogurt Still Thriving 14 Years After Creation

Yotopia Frozen Yogurt is a local business located in the heart of downtown Iowa City, Iowa. Its owner, Veronica Tessler, started the business in the late summer months of 2011 as students were returning to the campus of the University of Iowa for the upcoming fall semester. After experiencing the growing pains of starting and building the business, Tessler gained the admiration and support of the local community to continue her passion with the store. She also blossomed a valuable relationship with Country View Dairy, a dairy farm in Hawkeye, Iowa, at this time. Country View Dairy has been in operation since 2002, supplying Tessler’s frozen yogurt product since 2013. Together as partners, the business began to flourish, even enduring the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. It was through the pandemic where Tessler’s froyo “mash-ups” (12 premixed and ready to eat flavors of frozen yogurt) originated since her buffet-style business could not operate safely in that period of public health crisis. After the pandemic, Tessler’s decision to start growing her family at home with her husband Ryan has created the newest hurdle to jump through. Tessler has still managed to carve out time for Yotopia and the duties that come with being a business owner, such as responding to emails and peeking into the shop for periods of time every week to check in with her upbeat, friendly staff. With her business still as recognizable as it was in 2011, Tessler is now targeting taking her product statewide in stores throughout Iowa.
